This map was published in 1913, the same year Colorado's coalfields erupted into one of the deadliest labor conflicts in American history. That September, United Mine Workers struck against Colorado Fuel & Iron and other operators in the southern coal counties of Las Animas and Huerfano, demanding safer conditions after years of a mine-fatality rate more than double the national average. The strike dragged into the following spring, culminating in the Ludlow Massacre of April 1914.

We georeferenced the original 1913 survey and applied modern digital elevation data to add true shaded relief to Colorado's Rocky Mountains and high plains. The shading is printed flat on the paper — not raised or textured — so it frames and hangs like any fine art print.

Available unframed, or framed in black or walnut.

Note on legibility: text on the original map is small and can be difficult to read given the map's age. In areas where the relief shading is darkest, the underlying labels are not legible. We recommend the largest available size for the best detail.
