Acadia, Bar Harbor 1904 Shaded Relief Map
By 1904, Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island was in the middle of its Gilded Age heyday. Wealthy families had been building elaborate summer "cottages" here since the first went up in 1868, and by the turn of the century the town held over 200 of these seasonal mansions. Acadia National Park didn't exist yet — the same land wouldn't gain federal protection for another twelve years, when it was designated Sieur de Monts National Monument in 1916 before being renamed Acadia in 1929, making it the first national park established east of the Mississippi.
We georeferenced the original 1904 survey and applied modern digital elevation data to add true shaded relief to Mount Desert Island's granite peaks and rocky coastline. The shading is printed flat on the paper — not raised or textured — so it frames and hangs like any fine art print.
Available with or without our signature cloud overlay for a more atmospheric effect, and in your choice of black frame, walnut frame, or unframed.
Note on legibility: text on the original map is small and can be difficult to read given the map's age. In areas where the relief shading is darkest, the underlying labels are not legible. We recommend the largest available size for the best detail.
